Angel Dawns

Lore

Angel Dawns are magical, sometimes shapeshifting creatures from a planet called Gaia’s World. Their creator, Gaia, hand makes every Angel Dawn and sets out a path for them. They are anthropomorphic in that they speak, walk on hind digitigrade legs, and have complex culture.
Angel Dawns float in to town from the sea and the villagers adopt them. They are raised in the ways of their species and when they come of age are tested. They have a pen and paper test and if they pass must climb the Temple Mountain to be tested by and meet Gaia herself. Gaia determines if the Dawn is worth and after the child exits, they jump off the waterfall down the side of the temple. If they pass, they gain wings. If they fail, they fall and a temple guardian catches them.
Angel Dawns live forever but can be killed. There was a battle once, between a Dawn who failed and took control of the temple not allowing others to meet with Gaia. This Dawn killed two others before being killed themselves.
Gaia dislikes when Angel Dawns die as she is attached. She moves the heavens and arranges the stars above Gaia’s World to reflect the symbol of the deceased Angel Dawn. Gaia’s world is exactly on the opposite side of the universe from earth, meaning all the constellations reflect in the sky. The only Dawn not to receive a constellation upon death was Mars, the rogue, who was transformed into a planet very close to earth, a much hated star system by Gaia.
Dawns themselves have complex rituals around death. They bury their dead at sea on the horizon, in total 11 with most of the dead being accidents in the water. They’re wrapped in sheets and tied with ropes attached to a buoy and bob on the horizon line. That’s also where the life-giving reef full of fish ends. Gaia really liked fish, thought they were fantastic, and replicated them. They just weren’t allowed to take the human course this time.
All Angel Dawns who have earned their wings can shapeshift, although most choose not to. Because their bodies can change so rapidly, they have a complex understanding of gender identity. They don’t particularly class themselves romantically and don’t reproduce so are 100% asexual.
Each Dawn who has earned their wings receives a special skill or task to aide the other islanders. For example, some Angel Dawns get a the skill of temple keeper and remain at the temple learning how to do the job. There are several temple keepers at any one time, and several Dawns can maintain one role.

Rules

Currently, Angel Dawns are closed.
THEY ARE NOT PAYWALLED.
If you want to support the species, PancakeSquirrel the creator would be happy to oblige. The species is closed only because open species lose the world building over time and become mushy in anatomical traits and the creator much prefers the island to remain solid and sound.
